Deutsche Bank in joint collaboration with Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM) hosted a webinar covering Malaysian Capital Market Updates, which garnered 256 registered listeners from various industries. The conference call conversation with Datuk Syed Zaid Albar, Chairman of Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) was moderated by Jacqueline Williams, Managing Director of Direct Securities Services Malaysia, Deutsche Bank.
Mitigating the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the SC has announced a series of relief measures to support capital market intermediaries and investors in which Datuk Syed was able to give the rationale behind these relief measures put in place and also his view of Malaysia’s Capital Market in the “new norm”. In recalibrating and stabilizing efforts, the industry productivity increased as the pandemic accelerated the SC’s agenda of digitizing the capital market.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) or Sustainable and Responsible Investments (SRI) in Malaysia is a primary area of focus for market development as ESG funds have shown greater resilience suggesting increasing investor preference towards ESG standards and the value proposition presented by such investments even in turbulent times. Datuk Syed highlighted that the SC has undertaken developmental efforts focusing on enhancing competition and innovation in SRI and alternative investment products.
